- The partnership aims to enhance, inter alia, community quality of life and ensure future sustainability by facilitating global exchanges and supporting ethical, high-quality scientific research.
- The collaboration will leverage private finance for public good, scale up investments, and build stakeholder partnerships to drive large-scale social and environmental impact.
Delhi, India – The Global Alliance for a Sustainable Planet (GASP) and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 10 July, 2024. This MoU marks a significant milestone in the efforts to address some of the world’s most pressing environmental and social challenges through collaborative and transformative initiatives.
The MoU, signed by Mr. Satya S. Tripathi, Secretary-General of GASP, and Mr. Sanjay Mathur, Director of UNOPS Asia Pacific Region, creates a framework for both organizations to enhance global community resilience and well-being and ensure future sustainability through sustainable development initiatives.
This partnership aims to improve community quality of life while preserving resources for future generations, promoting collaboration between the scientific community and policymakers, and strengthening connections between the Global North and South.
This will be achieved through joint efforts in identifying prospective institutional counterparts and private sector entities for partnership opportunities in climate action, poverty alleviation, and sustainable development. They will facilitate meaningful exchanges and dialogue between relevant government bodies and institutions engaged in sustainable agriculture, critical minerals sustainability, food systems transformation energy efficiency, and energy access, among other issues
Additionally, it supports high-quality scientific research with a focus on sustainable infrastructure, climate adaptation and resilient ecosystems. The MoU also aims to engage indigenous peoples and vulnerable communities, integrating local knowledge into investment opportunities and policy innovations.
Furthermore, it seeks to collaborate on opportunities that bridge the gap between government, private sector, and communities to achieve large-scale social impact.
Mr. Satya S. Tripathi, Secretary-General of GASP, expressed, "This partnership is proof of our commitment towards sustainable development and transformative environmental impact. By joining forces with UNOPS, we can leverage our collective expertise and resources to create a more resilient and equitable world."
Mr. Sanjay Mathur, Director of UNOPS Asia Pacific Region, commented, "At UNOPS, we are deeply committed to the Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on creating tangible, positive impacts where they are needed most. This MoU with GASP empowers us to transform lives in vulnerable communities by addressing the urgent challenges of climate change and fostering sustainable development. Together, we can bring hope and resilience to millions, ensuring a brighter, more sustainable future for generations to come."
The cornerstone of the partnership is its unique mechanism to leverage private finance for public good, scaling up investments to enhance the 'GDP of the Poor.' Through these partnerships, UNOPS and GASP seek to build virtuous collaborations and support international engagements to capitalize on transformative opportunities for environmental and social impact.
