António Guterres Sworn in as Secretary-General of the United Nations

António Guterres, former Prime Minister of Portugal, was sworn in as the ninth Secretary-General of the United Nations, at a ceremony presided over by the UN General Assembly President, Peter Thomson. Mr. Guterres, who was until recently the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, will succeed South Korea’s Ban Ki-moon, who will step down on 31 December 2016 after 10 years at the helm of the Organization.
