Nearly 30 Hindi-language journalists from across India have taken part in a United Nations-run workshop aimed at enhancing their reporting on gender issues.
The half-day workshop, co-organized by UN Women India and the UN Information Centre New Delhi, in cooperation with the Press Club of India, brought together early-career journalists who work for newspapers and digital platforms.
The participants received training in understanding gender concepts, ethical guidelines and relevant laws, while also taking part in an interactive exercise and group discussions.
Senior journalists based in New Delhi and New York briefed the group on their practical experiences from decades of reporting from the field, while gender and legal experts briefed as well.
The workshop, held at UN House in New Delhi, was convened as part of the run-up to International Women’s Day. It is part of a wider effort to promote gender equality and encourage journalists to report on gender issues with greater sensitivity.
Opening the workshop, UN Women India’s country director Susan Ferguson underlined to the participants the important role that the media play in shaping and fostering public understanding of gender issues.
UNIC New Delhi’s director Darrin Farrant said the UN would explore holding similar workshops in the future, both on gender issues and on other subjects.
Participants stressed the importance of conducting similar workshops at the local and district levels.
